Jacob Vanderwal Kent Michigan - Three Keys to Becoming a Better Runner

Running is a great way to burn calories and get a good cardio workout. Whether you are training for a marathon or just starting out with running, a couple of tips can help you become a better runner. Of course, you won’t become a better runner overnight, so it is best to hang in there, and sooner or later you will see the difference in the way you run.

Eat the Right Foods

Just because you are running and burning off the calories, it does not mean that you can eat cheeseburgers, chips, pizzas, and guzzle down a can of Coke. Foods high in carbs and trans fats are not healthy for anyone and should be avoided at all costs. Running causes inflammation in the body, and eating highly processed foods will only increase inflammation, leading to other problems. Eat a balanced meal with lots of vegetables, limited protein, and good fats, and it will improve your running.

Water

When you run, the body uses up water at a much faster rate, so keeping your body hydrated is very important. However, you must ensure your body is hydrated long before you start running. If you are running a marathon, it is important to drink a lot of water the previous day of the race to keep your body well-hydrated.

Strength Training

Strength training is not bodybuilding and will not make you bulky. Strength training helps keep the body healthy and keeps you safe from running injuries. Simple body weight exercises like pushups, planking and sit-ups can help build your strength and make you a better runner.

Jacob Vanderwal of Kent Michigan is a college student and runs to keep fit.
